i read this article with Beck, and he was talking about shooting low end, super creative videos for every song on his album. I thought it was a great idea, but was saddened by the thought that I didn't have the dough to record an album. Then I thought, why don't I only shoot videos, and use the sound from the camera.
So I did. My buddy Mike Long is an editor, and we filmed each take with a mini dv, and then he edited it together as you would normally mix a song together, and this is what we got. There's one more on deck, and I'd like to do more...we'll see.

It was my second to last show out of about 20 from my South London tour last May. My voice is a little worse for wear, you can hear three new songs which are still taking shape, and you can hear a bunch of friends cheering and drinking.
I think I'd had about two hours sleep, and Phil and Mark had none...they rolled in straight from a party at 10am.

That's not all of 'em. Hmmm I'll remember later. The flight over was easy, getting into London and down into Brockley was easy. I dropped my stuff at Sylvia's place, where I'd be staying, and met up with Ceri James to get a beer at the Fox and Firkin, and as we walked past the DLR ( one of the local train services, named after David Lee Roth), I hear someone shout " HEATH!, HEATH!" and I see Wilf and Shaun. First day in London, and I get a shout out walking down the street. Oh yeah. So Ceri went to give a guitar lesson, and I walked up to Blackheath to kill some time...picked up a four pack, had a few, checked out all the posh people drinking white wine and eating goat cheese pizza...which isn't pizza, and went back to meet Ceri and some peeps at the Dacre Arms, his local watering hole. As I was waiting I saw a fox...a fox! There are foxes everywhere in south London it seems, and this was my first sighting of many.
I bought a video camera for this trip...the idea being to make a documentary of my trip, and I started realising what a pain in the ass this was going to be. Having the camera out all the time to be ready to film whenever, pulling it out mid conversation and killing the vibe cause people are suddenly being filmed. Much more work than having someone following me around filming all the great things I do. It made me quite self couscous.
I landed on the 2nd, and didn't have my first show till the 5th, so I had time to get over my jet lag and ease in to the heavy drinking lifestyle that would be mine for the next four weeks. All for now.

I haven't posted anything in ages. Oy. I'll go back and cover some things later. I'm in the UK and it's pretty amazing. SO far I've played 5 or six shows, Foxfest was crazy, last night I ended up playing a set at party, in the living room, 20 people singing along to every song. Really fun. I'm filming this whole tour, so 'll be posting...oops...there we go...videos, making a little documentary. check out this digital thing, you can buy the album for your mp3 player now.

I have a bunch more shows, and I'm scouring for more, so I'll be back w/ pics and info.

Back from NYC

So I just got back from New York. I love New York. I get so much energy from just being there...someday when I have the dough I'll live there. I was there recording a couple of new songs with Mike Long of CFB fame. I came up with a new sort of way...well, not new, but different to record and make a video, and we were testing it out. Very happy with the results...Jonah joined in one night, and their buddy Eric, and I now have two new songs with videos which I'll be postin in some order in the next month or so. I also got a copy of the video that Will Collins 5 years ago of " Be Cool". Rhee still has a full head of hair in the video, and mine is short. They'll all be up soon. It was great hanging with Mike and wandering around in the cold weather, also saw Lars Engstrom and my cousin. Before I left I played a show at the Red Devil in SF, here's a photo Audrey took ¡™£¢∞§¶•ªºº––≠‘“æ…÷≥≤ All those symbols are me looking for the key that'll do and arrow pointing up...no arrow.

So Friday night was the premiere of The Tripper, the movie I filmed last January. It was directed by David Arquette, and starred this guy, Chris Nelson, as well as me, Jason Mewes, Lukas Haas, Marsha Thomason, Paz de la Huerta, Jaimie King, Thomas Jane, Paul Reubens, Richmond Arquette and a bunch 'o others. It was so fun to make, and a thrill to see on the big screen. Took place at Hollwood and Highland, did the whole red carpet thing, wild. They assign you a person to lead you down the red carpet and introduce you, or tell the photographers who you are and why they should take your picture. WWell, this is very important for me, cause no one knows who I am!! Paul Reubens doesn't need some one to say, " Hey, this dude's in the movie etc". I, however, do. So this guy doesn't do anything but stand there, and after two seconds of blank faces from the photographers, they all start snapping away like crazy...on the person who just walked up next to me, Fred Durst. I'm already nervous as hell, and now I'm totally uncomfortable, cause I'm supposed to stand around like this, and finally my introducer person says, " Would you like to keep going now?" As if I was standing there all akward for 5 minutes by choice. I wanted to yell at the guy, but he was nice, and who am I to yell at anybody during this thing. So we finally got inside, sat down, David gave a speech and we watched the movie. It rocked...totally wierd to watch yourself up there. A bunch of my friends were there, I went with Audrey. The whole thing got a great response, I met Sashca Baron Cohen (Ali G, Borat etc) and Gary Shandling, and they both gave me props. That was probably the highlight of the whole evening. I brought firecrackers and lit 'em by the pool and got everyone thrown out, which was a nice end to the evening.

It was PACKED tonight, line around the block...I went to the exit claiming I left my cf card on the counter, and the guard let me through, bad form, I know, but I couldn't hack it in line.

I went to Banksy's show downtown LA today...it was pretty great, every card carrying hipster this side of whatever was there. I didn't bring my camera, maybe I'll go back tomorrow and take pics. I wonder how B would react to people painting and drawing on his stuff? Or to someone using one of his images for a poster or their album cover? All throughout the neighborhood people were snapping away at every piece of graffiti and stencil art they could find. I've noticed a rash of stencil art popping up over the past year or two, and for the vast majority, it seems a self promotion bid, pure and simple.
Walking downtown LA reminded me of a detour Dave and I took in Paris...
The day after our LeBaron show, we had to return a widget to the drum rental place on the outskirts of Paris. Dave forgot to put it in w/ the rest of the stuff Thomas was returning, so we set off to find the place, knowing the name of the suburb, with only a vague idea of where it was precisely. It took HOURS!!!!!!!!!!! Take the subway the wrong way, take it back the right way, subway closed, find train route, last stop closed, walk, walk, walk...and it was on this walk, after scrambling across a freeway, that we found ourselves on an industrial sidestreet of sorts. Pretty deserted area, some lady standing around, oddly made up, pretty haggard, another van, parked, woman at the wheel smoking, another van w/ woman, and another, used condoms, here, there, everywhere....there must have been 20 prostitutes in trucks/vans/busses lined up on this street!! What was it, 2:30pm? I don't know, it seemed pretty wild. Eventually we found the place, they hooked us up with a couple of espresso's, and we were off to Thomas's.
In CD news, ours is done. It took forever to finish, but we have finally done it. More later, nap time.
Back to basic's, or should I say, back to Banksy's, ...the contest is " who knew about Banksy first, and how they didn't think anyone else knew!", get your submissions in by the 10th. There was a short film w/ footage of him doing his thing etc, and that contest there seemed to be, who can laugh first to show how much/quickly they get it. Tonight I'm going to see Michel Gondry's new movie, which should be amazing, but will likely have much the same crowd. Gotta go put on my vest, PLO scarf, messenger bag, and army cap, bye!

This is the club in Paris that Thomas hooked up for us. Super cool vibe, dark and red and cramped. We were the only band booked, and then the place gets going late night, with people leaving from 6- 10 am. AM! I want to take a nap just hearing that! We rented drums and an amp w/ Thomas (who deserves all the credit in the world for putting in the time to get the show, finding out where to rent, puttingus up, and shuttling us around) and chilled in the...actually we didn't chill. Christiaan Rollich had taken the train from Amsterdam to meet us, so we all went on a massive all afternoon walking tour of paris. We went everywhere, and even saw the street where prostitutes hang, w/ all these dudes loitering and waiting for their favorite girl to be available again. The hookers were oooooold, and big. Wild. Soundcheck later...dance sound system, not ideal, but it sounded fine, and then we waited, and waited and waited. We were mildly scolded for not having brought more folks, but when we were inviting people, they would respond w/ " I can't get in there". Fancy dancy poo poo pancy! So we started late, which was cool. Sabine, the manager was rad about letting us go on at midnight. Rock and Michele showed, so did Patricia, who had a few drinks in her, so they wouldn't let her in...we talked em into it. The show rocked, we started mellow, and brought it up to speed, and finished strong at 40 min's. Then they said keep playing! Well' we had played our show stopping finish already, so it was a sort of stop starty 4 more songs or so. Some french guy got up and did an impromptu rap beat box ali g thing, which was actually pretty good, though I've never seen Dave so mad. They want us back, we want back. Thomas took the equipment back, the saint, so we could hang w/Christiaan and stay at his hotel in Paris. So we had a few more and bailed about 3 am. Next day was tourist stuff and returning drum widget that Dave forgot to pack. More on that next time!

We stayed in this bitchin hostel that was TRASHED! First off, the guy at the desk didn't speak any english...would you have guessed? So I spent about 15 minutes trying to get accross door lock? Key? Keeeey! Store? No, I don't want to go to a store...etc. etc. without giving out that I have a guitar worth $$$$ in there. We get up there w/ a key after that, and this room is destroyed. Somebody took a hammer to these walls, ripped out the ceiling, shower tiles falling out, no nozzle, electric outlets taped into the walls, smelled of urine, and had a beautiful view. Perfect! The place was pretty dope, central, next to Bastille. We found a great local bar where we sipped Campari rocks late night after everywhere else was closed.

So for the next couple of weeks I'll be posting stories about the rest of our tour as I remember them. All in all, it was amazing. We met so many really nice people, played 9 really fun shows, well, ten including Paris, 12 including NYC, sold a bunch of cd's, and basically rocked. It was crazy how many people helped us out, really generous as far as referring us to venues and promoters and just hooking up shows. I don't know what it is about London or the UK in general, but playing shows there is just so fun, people are super responsive. We got the kind of reaction that makes one think, " One, why aren't I over here all the time, doing this all the time?" Money is the answer, I guess. Paris ruled,Thomas hooked up the coolest club, hanging in the city was great, staying in the shadiest...well, not shady, just trashed...hostel ever. It smelled like urine. Urine luck! Dave and I came up w/ a bunch of new street names, Rue de Day, Rue de Maan, Rue de Bega. HA! Hit the Louvre, beautiful weather, so sunny I had to hang in the shade of the Louvre.....ooooooooooooh! We played a couple of really fun shows the last few days. Last night was at The Hatcham Social Club in...Hatcham. This place was a time capsule out of '72. Supper club vibe, mobster in the corner etc. I'll try and get some pics up on flckr. We were moved from second on to last on, 11:15. It was filled w. screaming kids 13-18. !6 year olds doing blow before their set, drinking, crazy. We played a good set, some sound issues, sold CD's and got e-mails. Dave was two hours late to sound check, which ended up not mattering. The other show was the night before at Goldsmiths University Student Union. Ceri set it up for the release of I love New Cross comp CD. We played last and rocked, fine show. Ceri opened it up. We skipped out on our ferry tickets to France the next morning to play the Hatcham show last night, an expensive decision, as we were unable to get more ferry tix, Bank Holiday. Worth it though. So it was Eurostar $$$$. Walking to the Goldsmiths show, I ran into James Calvert from Interact Theatre Co. I knew he was in town, but wasn't sure he would make it to a gig. He was w/ Phina, a friend of his who used to live in LA and now lives in Blackheath. They had to leave before we went on, as we were slated for 10pm ish, and were moved to midnight. Bummer they had to leave, show went off.
Arrived in France today, took train to Thomas and Leslie's pad in Themericourt. It is so beautiful here it is amazing. Sunny, warm, flowers blooming, Gracie the dog sniffin around. Thomas and Leslie sat us down and fed us like expat kings; fresh bread, 5 cheeses, proscutto, lox, nuts,tea, juice, water....a nap in the sun, Gracie woke me up by sticking here tongue in my mouth. Audrey will be angry. Tomorrow night is our Paris show. Rock!

UK '06 1st entry

Things are going well...we rocked the Brixton Telegraph on the 21st, our first show of the tour. It was a blast, Lars's buddy Bobby 2 Shoes and his brother James came down. All the other bands came in to watch us, first up, and were really nice. Then we had to leave after our set like a couple a jerks. Bobby and bro took us to the Windmill Brixton which ruled, small, hot, cramped w/ great bands. Ran into a guy, Rich, who'd I'd met the night before at The Dirty South, where we went to visit Caffy, who hooked me up w/ Ceri during my last UK excursion. Ceri has put us up w/ SYlvia, sweetes woman ever. She keeps us stocked on green tea. She rules. More later running out of time!

My buddy Dave gave me the hi hat on finding me and picking me up, so I trudged around in the rain, crestfallen, feeling a bit like little Oliver Twist must have felt. Must have. Finally I made it to Oliver's pad, his room-mate letting me in, and I crashed hard. The next few days were wedding stuff w/ Dave and Amanda, then I played my two shows, the Six String and the Brixton Telegraph. The shows were so much fun it was crazy. Very small crowds, local kids, and/or friends of the various bands that had tagged along to see their buddies rock. I was pretty nervous at first, but it all worked out. I met this guy Ceri ( hard C) who booked the 6 String, super nice, and he ended up coming to the states and crashing on my couch to play a few shows in L.A. after checking my example. Bitchin'. The promotors all paid me something, which was very generous, and gave me free beers. I was giving away 6 song discs, and wound up making money on them, which was a huge surprise. I'll talk about France in my next post. Back to England. My last gig was the most rocking ...more people there...Cathrine and her mother Pammie rolled...so did Katy, a friend I made a few years ago at Les Deux Cafes...and Oliver's room mates Sean and...ahh...damn, I forget his name. I hadn't had such a consistantly enthusiastic response to my music in a long time, and it was very nice. I ran out of CD's, filled up my e-mail list, and decided that I was coming back regularly, or moving there for good.

UK July '05

So my trip to London was an incredible adventure. I arrived at Heathrow Airport to no trains, thickening crowds, few taxi’s, bus lines hundreds of people long, and no phones. I was told there had been a bombing or something, but couldn’t get any real info until armored vehicles unloaded what looked like military w/ full body armor and machine guns. Then I was told the there had been a terrorist attack on the London tube system. It took about three hours to get into London, which was deserted, and another five or so to get to my accommodations. I wound up taking a cab w/ a german guy and a kid from Africa. The kid was super shy, but I rapped out with the German. He had a son my age, so he was very interested in my tavails. We got the the kid's destination, and he tells the driver he has no money! The cabbie was enraged! " Do you know that when you get in a cab, you must have money to cover your fare? " etc etc. The kid kept saying, " I'm sorry, I'm sorry", and the cabbie kept saying " I am supposed to, by law, phone the police ". Finally, the kids aunt comes out of the house we've been in front of for almost half an hour, and pays up! So we got to central London, the German paid the cab, I was stocked, and I wandered to the nearest phone booth. My cell phone wouldn't work, and I had been told cell signals were off to prevent terrorist comunication, so I tried my phone card. To no avail. Over and over and over and over... The energy in the city was just manic, everyone hustling around, trying to get home, so I wandered down Oxford, through Soho, stopped for a beer, watched the news, and took a nap in Hyde Park. When I woke up it was a bit like some zombie movie: everone was gone. I walked around for another hour or so, trying a phone here or there, and then it started to rain. By this time my back was cramping up from my huge pack, my Wallabee feet were freezing and damp, and I was losing it. I finally got in touch w/ Oliver, the generous ex of Alexis that I was going to stay w/, and he was vacating the city, as he was very near one of the bombs at detonation. I have to stop now, more later

Golly, I think I'm stepping into the future. I have nothing to say. If you're reading this, check back in a week or so, by then I should have thought of something interesting to say. I will primarily use this as a sort of update section to go along w/ my bands web-site, because I'm too lazy to learn how to update my site myself. My band is called HEATH!, and our web-site should be posted to the right, I'll see if I can get that to work. I also play drums in a band called Thistle LLC, I'll also put their web-site up. I'm gonna see how this works.
